Microsoft Teams AADSTS errors are really confusing. To clarify, AADSTS stands for Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) security token service (STS). In other words, Azure’s security token service failed to authenticate your connection request.
Some AADSTS errors seem to affect Microsoft Teams more frequently than others. One such error is Microsoft Teams Error AADSTS90033: A transient error has occurred. This error indicates the Microsoft Online Directory Service (MSODS) is not available.
Other frequent AADSTS errors that Teams users often encounter include AADSTS90043, AADSTS50107, AADSTS50177, AADSTS50196, AADSTS50020, and AADSTS90097.
What to Do If Microsoft Teams Displays AADSTS Errors
Check if Azure AD is Down
Keep in mind that these errors can sometimes occur if there is a service outage. Check the Azure status for any information about outages. If Microsoft already acknowledged the problem you’re experiencing, wait until they fixed the issue on their end.
Contact Your Admin
Oftentimes, fixing AADSTS errors requires contacting your IT admin and opening a support ticket in the Azure portal. There’s little that you can do on your end to troubleshoot AADSTS errors. So, if you’re not a tech-savvy person, it’s best to contact your IT admin. Let them know about your problem. If you’re an IT admin, we hope the tips below will come in handy.
Switch to a Different Primary Email
Some AADSTS errors occur if you use a personal Microsoft account that matches a domain name already registered as a tenant in Office 365.
- Open an Incognito tab on your browser. Then login into microsoft.com/account using the problematic email.
- Next, click on Info and add a new email address. Most importantly, the new email should not be linked to an existing Microsoft account within your organization. Create a new email address if necessary.
- Then select the new email and make it your primary email.
- Remove the old email address from your account. Check if this method solved the problem.
Sign in as an Anonymous User
Alternatively, you can use the Sign-in as anonymous option. You can find the option right below login. Check if you’re able to join in as an anonymous user.
Tweak Authentication Settings
- Go to portal.azure.com, and select App registrations.
- Then select your app and go to the Authentication tab (left-hand pane).
- Navigate to Supported account types and select Accounts in any organizational directory and personal Microsoft accounts. Check if you can log in now.
