Gmail: How to Change the Default Text Formatting

Mel HawthorneNovember 16, 2020 Comments (0)

Text styling can be an important personal preference that makes the page easier to read for you. With email text, this styling is typically also used by the recipient, where supported. This allows you to share some of your styling preferences and is commonly used for corporate branding purposes.

In Gmail, you can choose your default text styling in the settings. To be able to access the settings, click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner, then click “See all settings”.

Click on the cogwheel icon then “See all settings”.

You can find the text formatting options in the “General” tab of Gmail’s settings, listed in the “Default text style” section. The options you can configure are the font, text size and text colour.

There are eleven different fonts to choose between with a reasonable spread of styles. There are four text sizes to choose between with both smaller and larger than default options. There are sixty-four different text colour options to choose between from a colour palate.

Each change that you make can be seen in real-time in the line just underneath that says, “This is what your body text will look like”. This lets you see exactly what your email text will look like before you commit to the change. If you decide that you don’t like your changes and want to rest the text appearance back to default by clicking the “T” symbol with a diagonal line through it, just to the right of the colour selection icon. Once you’ve made all the changes that you want to, you need to scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save Changes” for your changes to be applied.

The text format settings can be found in the “Default text style” section. From left to right you can configure the font, size, and colour of text, or rest the formatting to the default settings.

Tip: These settings only apply to emails that you write, they don’t affect emails you receive or the user interface.
