Google Docs: How to Use Page Breaks

What are Page Breaks in Google Docs? It’s a tool that Google Docs has that allows you to create sections so they can have their own style if that’s what you want to do. You can use this feature to move that content in your file to another sheet.

This is useful when you’re writing about topics and what everything about one topic to be on one page. Another feature you can use to have a table (for example) on the same page is the Pageless Format.

How to Add or Remove Page Breaks in Google Docs

You’ve created your first section in your Google Docs document and even added a watermark. Now you’re ready to add a page break. To insert a page break, click on the Insert tab at the top and place the cursor on the Break option near the bottom.

The side menu is going to show you three options. The page break option drops the text after the cursor on a new page. If you want to start a new section on the next page, you can choose Section Break (Next Page). The third option, Section Break (Continuous), will start a new section on the same page you’re currently on.

The Page Break option won’t display a line of any sort. When you choose this option, you’ll simply notice that a new page has been created. The Next Page option will move the cursor to a new page, and the Continuous option will add an invisible blue dotted line. The section break will be there, but you must follow some additional steps to see it.

Google Docs Show section breaks

To see the section breaks you’ve added, click on the View tab at the top and choose the Show section breaks option. After that, you’ll see the dotted lines that’ll separate all your section. If you ever want to hide them again, follow the same steps and select the Show section breaks. This will remove the check mark and hide the breaks again.

How to Remove a Page Break in Google Docs

Maybe you inserted a page break in the wrong place or need to get rid of it for whatever reason. You can remove the page break by placing the cursor on top of the break you want to remove and pressing delete. No option will remove all the page breaks you’ve added. It’s something you’re going to need to do with each one you’ve added. This can be time-consuming if you’ve added a lot of them.

If you’ve recently created the break, you can remove it by going to Edit > Undo. If not, you’ll need to follow the previously mentioned instructions.

Conclusion

If you want each page or section of your Google Docs file to have its own style, adding a break is a great way to go at it. If you forget where you inserted a break, you know how to make them appear and disappear. Unfortunately, there isn’t an option that will remove all page breaks for you with a single click. That would be great if Google were to add that option, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. How useful do you find these page breaks?
